HOW TRUCKS ARE RATED
GVW RATINGS EXPLAINED
GVW Ratings -- Truck manufacturers assign each truck they sell a GVWR, which stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This rating simply means that the fully equipped, fully loaded truck should not weigh more than the GVW rating. It might be asked here: Why don't they simply tell us how much payload the truck will carry? The manufacturers, of course, can't do this because they don't know the weight of the truck body and equipment that's to be installed on the truck before it's placed in service.
So, the truck buyer, when determining if a given truck will carry his desired payload, has to do some subtracting from the the GVW rating. He has to subtract the cab-chassis weight and the weight of whatever body and equipment he intends to install on the chassis -- flat bed, box van, lift gate, dumping hoist, crane or whatever. The remainder is his allowable payload.
